Kenosha Cougars
About Us
2006:
The Kenosha Cougars were founded by Eric Daniel. The colors were chosen from the combination of Zion Benton High School’s gold and of course the Chicago Bears navy blue.
With a 7 and 2 record, the Cougars took the first GFL Bowl’s trophy with and 18-0 victory over the Lake Shore Lynx.
2008:
Even though the Cougars started off as a Zion team, games had to be played in Kenosha due to unavailable field. The second year, the Cougars made it official to make the move to Kenosha. The new home field of Ameche field was established.
This was a growth year for the Cougars as they finished with a 4-5 record. Barely making it into the playoffs, they ended up in the semi finals with a loss to the Lake Shore Lynx.
2009:
The Cougars first head coach was recruited in 2009. Dave Verbeten took the team back to a winning record of 6-4 and to it’s third semi-final game. A close loss to the Racine Heat ended the season.
Also in 2009, the Cougars’ started the GFL’s first cheerleading squad consisting of 16 girls. Crystal Weidner turned this squad into a successful squad that still stands as the only one in the GFL.
2010:
Savino Macias, an original player from the start, joined the ranks of ownership and with his skill sets helped launch the Cougars in a new direction. His skill sets of graphics and community service brought a new generation to the team. With his passion for football and community, the Cougars have now invested thousands of dollars into community to include organizations like the Special Olympics, Women and Children Horizons, and Boys and Girls Club.
The 8-2 Cougars ended their season with their 4th semi-final game against the Fox Valley Premier. A nail biter game was lost in the final seconds on a failed extra point attempt after a holding call.
2011:
The Cougars continued to build their organization with a 9 and 1 record. They got passed their 3 year semi-final game wall and made it back into the GFL Bowl but came short with a 20-0 loss to the 3 time defending champion Lake Shore Lynx.
Summary:
This team was built on a foundation with one value, that separates it from most other semi-pro teams, and that is family first, career second and football third. Throughout the Cougars existence, games have been played on Friday nights, for the most part, and practices are held only once a week on Sunday mornings. This value alone has created a team that the players have responded well to. The players have committed themselves to those two days and with this commitment have turned into one of the more polished teams within Illinois and Wisconsin.
Like work, you should always commitment yourself 100% while there and your time away with the same commitment. The core values have been instilled that the Cougars will always conduct themselves with professionalism, integrity and have always played the game for what it is, 100% on the field.
